Certainly; as a man thinketh(present continuous tense)in his heart, so is he. Therefore, we think lack, then 'lack' it is. likewise when we meditate on abundance we attract abundance-simple. This is a very thought provoking view point, time allowing I could do much. However I will endeavour to be brief. God said, he is not a man that he should lie... so then, when God stated in Psalms's:27 'Let the Lord be magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.' May be the real issue is not that God wishes to punish us rather; we are not his 'servant' there-in lies the lack. David said "I was young, now I am old I have never seen the righteous forsaken NOR and thats not a typo(NOR) lets go to infinity....his seed begging for bread. God cannot lie, will never lie; abundance then is indeed relative to not just service, but how we harness our FAITH how much we can think to ask of God or even if we ask of God. The scripture stated we do not ask, we do not receive. As to whether God is punishing us....so a man thinketh...
